Today is a tragic day for the fashion industry. The talented designer Kate Spade, has passed in what seems to be an apparent suicide. Kate Valentine was discovered in her New York City apartment Tuesday morning unresponsive by her housekeeper. It appears the designer hanged herself with a scarf at her Park Avenue apartment. There was a note found at the scene.
She leaves behind her husband of 24 years, Andy Spade, her daughter, Frances Spade, and brother-in-law, actor David Spade. The news comes on the second day of the CFDAs New York Fashion Week, and the day after the CFDA awards which Kate Spade is a member of.
Kate Valentine was only 55 years old. She and her husband started the infamous handbag brand, Kate Spade, in 1993. It quickly became known as the it bag to carry in the 90s, and to many a status of entering adulthood. The designs were sleek and minimalistic with a touch of playfulness. Many who couldn’t afford the originals would go down to canal street to buy the knock offs with a Kate Spade label haphazardly slapped on. She truly created and empire that millions coveted.
In 2007, the couple sold their company to Liz Claiborne for $125 million, who then renamed it Kate Spade & Co. In 2017, Coach (now running under the name Tapestry), bought Kate Spade for 2.4 billion dollars. None of which Kate Valentine or Andy Spade saw.
In the mean time, the couple started a new accessories line named after their daughter, Frances Valentine. It is what also inspired Kate’s name change.

Heartbroken to hear about #KateSpade. My favorite designer who looked out for women of all shape & means. She was a beautiful and talented woman & while she brought so much confidence & happiness to other women, I am saddened she was missing in her own life. RIP
