I recently discovered a trick to sleep so soundly and easily while calming my anxiety before going to bed. It never occurred to me that I may need a routine to relax at night. What I discovered helps prevent those restless nights thinking about work and “what am I doing in my life”. Take a look!
Magically one day I had two hours to do nothing before going to sleep. It is a rare occurance that I have any hours not pegged down to do some type of commitment, so to have two hours It felt like a holiday. The next day I woke up from the best sleep of my life. What was the reason? I did the following in those two hours before bed.
My Bedtime Routine:
10pm – Two hours before bedtime– turn off the computer, tv and disconnect from emails and social media. Basically power down all electronics. If you want, try turining your phone off completely or to airplane mode
10:05- tidy apartment/ home. Simply cleaning up everything such as dishes, clothes, put away shoes helps in several ways. First, it slowly gets my body to relax and releases any extra energy. Secondly, cleaning is very meditative for me and often results in figuring out solutions to problems. Lastly, knowing everything is clean and ready for the next day puts me at easy. This takes roughly 30 mins for me to do.
10:35- I light a candle once I am done cleaning. There is something very theraputic in seeing a clean space and having a nice candle burning. While the candle is burning, I make some herbal or camamile tea. Often while standing in my tiny kitchen drinking tea I jot down anything that came up while I was cleaning. It could be blog posts ideas, ways to be a better person, or reminders for tomorrow. Basically getting all the extra thoughts out of my head and on to paper so I could rest easily. This takes about 15 mins but never rushed if I need more time to just breathe and relax.
10:50/11pm- I dry brush my entire body before taking a hot bath or shower. If I ran long distance that day, I add lavender Epsom salt into my bath. I am such a sucker for a great long bath. It is so relaxing, I just let go of all my worries. Occasionally I will place a face mask on while sitting in a bath. A hot shower is also very relaxing when I am not in the mood for a bath. This process takes about 30-45 minutes.
11:30/11:45- the last few steps before bed. I typically use Palmer coconut lotion on my entire body or a nourishing oil to moisturize my skin. For my face I do the same with a face cream- it often changes by what I am testing for my blog. Right now I am seriously obsessed with Kate Sommerville Anti Aging kit. Lastly, I brush my teeth.
Roughly 2 hours later, I am in bed passed out counting sheep.
I hope this helps anyone who is looking for a relaxing bedtime routine. When I don’t have the chance to do this because of work events, I feel it the next day! So crazy how my body works. Anyway, if you have a routine that you want to share leave it in the comments below!
