Steve Aoki x Dim Mak Collection presented their fifth collection during NYFWM (New York Fashion Week Mens) January 31st at Skylight Clarkson Square. The well-know DJ put his own twist on the presentations by turning the runway into a skate ramp and using skaters instead of models. Probably the most creative presentation I’ve seen during Fashion Week.
The Japanese label is a shoot off of Steve Aoki’s record label and production company, Dim Mak. Four other collections have been produced in Japan, where the design team is based. This was the first time Dim Mak Collection was presented in the US.
Four skaters would step onto the platform, posing before dropping into the ramp. There were two half-pipes made specifically for the space, one long and one slightly shorter, allowing the audience to watch two looks at the same time. After ten minutes, they would switch out for a second set of skateboarders. All the while David Choe (who created most of the patterns for the collection) and his band Mangchi performed at the end of the ramps keeping the high energy going.
Not surprising, there were a lot of A-list attendees to view Steve Aoki x Dim Mak Collection. The list included:
- Fabolous- Singer and this year’s CFDA ambassador for NYFWM
- Kim Hastreiter- Co-Founder/Editor of Paper Magazine
- J Balvin- Famous musician from Colombia
- Nick Wooseter- Famous menswear influencer
- Of Course, Steve Aoki and David Choe
