With the holidays here, I find it important to balance the over indulging feasts and high-stress work week with some health-conscious actions. This past weekend I made a trip to Higher DOSE in the east village to give infrared saunas a try.
Infrared saunas have been on my wishlist for awhile due to the amazing health benefits and meditative properties of the light therapy. An hour session in an infrared sauna has similar health benefits as running 3-4 miles and doing a 7-day juice cleanse. It also increases serotonin while decreasing cortisol levels. The light therapy contains anti-aging properties as well as relieves pain or inflammation. As for the color you chose, read the multitude of benefits here.
What to expect
Expect to sweat a lot! I did a thirty-minute session to start, and I still sweated profusely. The first ten minutes it was totally fine, and then all of the sudden the infrared kicked in. Even my bellybutton was sweaty. There is a very calming and refreshing feeling once the time was up. My skin felt really soft and pure. I felt like I had accomplished something superior and great for my body.
My experience at Higher DOSE
It was very calming and I love the atmosphere. You walk through the Alchemist Kitchen, a very zen shop then head downstairs to the spa. It is super quiet and peaceful which is a nice change from the hectic streets that await outside. The rooms are small but hold the essentials, like a sink, two towels, and the actual sauna. They currently don’t have showers which I was expecting they would have. The attendant said they are in the process of building them. Being new, they’re still working out the kinks, but overall I really enjoyed the experience and will be back again! This time for a full hour.
